Edinburgh Napier University has launched the UK’s first MSc in Business Events Management in partnership with the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. Paul Barron, the university’s Professor in Hospitality and Tourism Management, explains more…

Key facts about the University and EICC?

Edinburgh Napier University has over 19,500 students. In 2016 this included nearly 9,500 international and EU students, from more than 140 nations worldwide. The Business School is based at the Craiglockhart Campus and has over 6,500 students studying a range of programmes. The school has been a major provider of higher education for the Tourism and Hospitality industry for over 30 years.

It’s a partnership that increases the profile of Edinburgh as a business event destination and places the city at the centre of business event education.

Edinburgh International Conference Centre opened in 1995 and has since welcomed 1.3 million delegates from more than 120 countries.  It caters to around 200,000 delegates a year and generates more than £60m in revenue for the city of Edinburgh. The new Atrium and Lennox Suite extension opened in 2013 at a cost of £85m. Around 66% of EICC’s clients are repeat customers, with many delegates returning to Edinburgh and Scotland as leisure tourists with their families and friends.

Rationale behind the partnership?

The business events industry is recognised as increasingly important for both local and national economies. But very few higher education programmes are focused on supplying this developing industry with qualified managers. The Masters degree in Business Event Management that we’ve developed with the EICC aims to provide the meetings, conference, convention and exhibition industry with appropriately knowledgeable and qualified managers. The aim is to ensure the industry continues to develop and enjoy the benefits associated with an increasingly professional management workforce.

What does it say about Edinburgh?

Edinburgh has long been an attractive destination for conference and convention organisers who have been well served by the EICC. Edinburgh is also an attractive student destination and Edinburgh Napier has emerged as a key provider in event education.

This partnership recognises this attraction and combines the specialism of Edinburgh Napier as an educator and the expertise and experience of the EICC to provide a unique experience for the student. It’s a partnership that increases the profile of Edinburgh as a business event destination and places the city at the centre of business event education.

What do you hope to achieve?

Students follow a three trimester (one year) programme of study and, alongside classroom based subjects, have the opportunity to spend a period of professional practice at the EICC. This will help them learn about the operational areas and experience the various management functions. Students will also be able to use the EICC as the focus of research for their dissertation.

The idea is to provide students with an industry-focused qualification that encourages a direct link between the theory learned in the classroom and the practice experienced at the EICC. This partnership also formalises the relationship between Edinburgh Napier University and the EICC and allows Edinburgh Napier University to further develop appropriate specialisms. It also provides the EICC with useful research data – and potential future managers.
