Startup Summit returns to Edinburgh

Published: 09 October 2017

The Startup Summit entrepreneurship event returns to Edinburgh on 1 November 2017. Bruce Walker, Founder of WeAreTheFuture, which hosts the event, explains more…

Your business in brief?

WeAreTheFuture is a global startup forum which hosts international summits and programmes for entrepreneurs around the world. Our mission is to inspire and connect entrepreneurs, while proving you can build a better world through business.

Edinburgh was awarded 'British Entrepreneurial City of the Year' last year and personally, I think the blend of culture, connectivity, quality of life and ambition is what makes Edinburgh one of the most magical cities on the planet.

Bruce Walker, Founder, WeAreTheFuture

I set up the business in 2011 at the age of 17 from a high school classroom at Wallace High School in Stirling. In 2013, I moved to Edinburgh and registered the company while studying at Edinburgh Napier University.  Today we're a team of eight people, based in the former Printworks factory in Leith, surrounded by creative and disruptive Edinburgh-based companies. From our Edinburgh base, we operate globally in Europe, the US and Asia.

In 2017, WeAreTheFuture went through an exciting merger, where we joined forces with The Power of Youth to form Fx Group, a family of brands which work collectively to build a better world through business, the group includes WeAreTheFuture, Metta Network and FutureX

What is the Summit and why is it important?

The Startup Summit is one of the most exciting entrepreneurship events in the country! Inspired by our international work, we bring the global startup ecosystem to Scotland to explore all the diverse areas that help entrepreneurs succeed.

This year we're welcoming over 1,000 entrepreneurs and 60+ speakers across three stages exploring 'Founder Stories', 'Business Builders' and 'Impact', ending in the Summit After Party at Edinburgh's famous Caves.

What are the key highlights? Who will be involved?

Among the illustrious speaker line-up, we have the co-founder of Brewdog, James Watt, who will be interviewed live on the main stage by Scotland's first home-grown billionaire and venture philanthropist, Sir Tom Hunter.

The summit is being sponsored by Business Gateway, Barclays, Linc Scotland, Johnston Carmichael, Morisons Solicitors and Entrepreneurial Scotland, who are committing themselves to supporting the incredible entrepreneurial talent that comes through our doors. In previous years, the Startup Summit has been attended by some of the world's most exciting brands, including Google, eBay, Skyscanner, Virgin and Rocketspace.

The Startup Summit is one of the most exciting entrepreneurship events in the country.

Why is Edinburgh best suited for your event?

We're so excited to be hosting the Startup Summit in Edinburgh again for the sixth consecutive year. Each year we travel the world running events and programmes for entrepreneurs, but nothing is more exciting than returning home to Edinburgh to host our biggest event of the year.

The city of Edinburgh is like a giant incubator for new startups. The whole city is bursting with innovation and talent, so we feel privileged that once a year we get to pull all of that together and show it off at the Startup Summit. Edinburgh was awarded 'British Entrepreneurial City of the Year' last year and personally, I think the blend of culture, connectivity, quality of life and ambition is what makes Edinburgh one of the most magical cities on the planet.

The Startup Summit takes place at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms on 1 November 2017.
