Your business in brief?
Amazon’s mission is to be the world’s most customer-centric company and to be the place online where our customers can find anything they need. Across the UK we employ more than 19,000 permanent staff – more than 2,500 in Scotland – and we expect to employ 24,000 across the UK by the end of 2017.
The aim of the day is to provide practical advice for Scottish SMEs thinking about growing their business online. We’re keen to support and enhance Edinburgh’s offering for entrepreneurialism and innovation.Graeme Smith, managing director, Amazon Development Centre Edinburgh
Our employees in Scotland work across our customer service and development centres in Edinburgh, our two fulfilment centres in Dunfermline and Gourock, our three delivery stations, and our Prime Now site in Glasgow.
In the UK alone we’ve invested over £6.4bn since 2010, and support more than 370,000 small businesses, developers and independent authors who use our online services such as Amazon Marketplace, Kindle Direct Publishing and Amazon Web Services to grow and succeed. In 2016, UK sellers achieved £1.8 billion of exports through Amazon Marketplace.
What is the workshop?
On Tuesday 23 May, we have the very first Amazon Academy event in Scotland. It’s a free, one-day event at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre featuring keynote presentations and workshops from experts and entrepreneurs alike, to give practical support and guidance for small and medium enterprises wanting to grow their businesses online.
The event is being run in conjunction with Scottish Enterprise and renowned small business network Enterprise Nation, who provide support for more than 70,000 SMEs across the UK.
What happens on the day?
The event runs from 9am to 4.30pm. In the morning, you'll be able to find out how you can make the most of the digital opportunity as a small business, with insight from Amazon, Scottish Enterprise, Entrepreneurial Spark, Enterprise Nation and other independent experts and successful entrepreneurs.
After a networking lunch, attendees will be given practical advice on how to capitalise on Amazon’s global digital and physical products and services to boost revenue, improve productivity, and reach customers globally.
Topics include boosting export sales by selling on Amazon Marketplace; bringing innovative new products to market through Amazon Launchpad and using cloud computing to be lean, fast and agile through Amazon Web Services. We’ll also look at how to reach customers through new innovations like Alexa, Amazon’s new cloud-based voice service.
What do you hope to achieve?
The aim of the day is to provide practical advice for Scottish SMEs thinking about growing their business online. We’re keen to support and enhance Edinburgh’s offering for entrepreneurialism and innovation – and the Edinburgh event follows the success of similar Amazon Academy events in London and Manchester.
