Burges Salmon opens Scottish office

Published: 28 January 2019

Bristol-based law firm Burges Salmon is opening an office in Edinburgh’s Atria One development. We spoke to managing partner Roger Bull.

Your business in brief?

Burges Salmon is an independent UK law firm which focuses on delivering the best mix of advice, service and value to our clients. We were founded in 1841 and today have over 400 lawyers (including 87 partners) and in total more than 750 people.  In 2018, we achieved a turnover of £90 million for the first time.

Edinburgh is attractive to us as a key location in Scotland, given the number of our clients that are located there, and its broader appeal as a major centre for growth in our key markets.

We compete at the top of the legal market, undertaking complex legal work and projects for listed and privately owned companies, entrepreneurial businesses and individuals, and for many organisations in the public sector including central government and other public bodies.

We provide these sophisticated clients with a wide range of core legal and project management services, with a focus on clients in certain key sectors including energy, financial services, transport, real estate and infrastructure.

We provide our services to clients across the whole of the UK. To do this, we have lawyers who are qualified to work in all three legal jurisdictions in the UK - Scotland, Northern Ireland and England and Wales. We also work internationally across the globe through a comprehensive network of independent law firms.

Atria One is a landmark Grade A office development located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Exchange District, the leading business and financial area.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Our decision to open an office in Edinburgh is first and foremost about recognising and responding to the needs of our key clients, and is aligned with the firm’s strategy of focusing on key sectors. This initiative will support the continued growth of the firm’s successful and long-standing Scottish practice.

Edinburgh is attractive to us as a key location in Scotland, given the number of our clients that are located there, and its broader appeal as a major centre for growth in our key markets.

What presence do you already have here? What’s the rationale for the additional office space?

Members of our Scottish practice, other partners and lawyers travel to and work in Scotland on a regular basis. Our Scottish practice has grown considerably over the last decade, with a particular focus on the energy sector.

Having an office in Edinburgh will improve our ability to provide the highest quality service to our clients and to grow our practice in our key markets.

We see real opportunities to grow our business by investing in Scotland in this way, and we know through discussions with our clients that this decision has already been very well received. We are very excited at the prospects of our Edinburgh office playing a central role in our firm-wide strategy of growth in our key sectors.

Burges Salmon is an independent UK law firm which focuses on delivering the best mix of advice, service and value to clients in all three UK jurisdictions.

We expect to take occupancy of our new office at Atria One in Edinburgh’s Exchange business district during 2019, after a design and fit out programme has completed.

The office will include a workspace and a client suite, focused on enabling collaborative working with our expanding Scottish client base.

What's the vision for your business?

Our vision is to be an exceptional law firm for our clients that meets their needs and to be the ‘go to’ law firm for clients in our chosen sectors and key specialisms.

We also aim to be the law firm employer of choice in the UK and to be an exceptional place for our people to work and thrive.
