Ninety per cent of new UK jobs require digital literacy, yet just one in four businesses feel their employees have the skills to meet their digital needs, according to the Digital Economy Business Survey in Scotland.
We launched Google Digital Garage in the UK three years ago to help address this kind of gap in opportunity and give people the skills they need to achieve the goals they haven’t reached - yet. The Google Digital Garage is there to support everyone, whether you’re taking your first steps online, aiming to grow your career or launch your own business.
What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?
Edinburgh is the UK’s fastest-growing tech hub, and there is a deep pool of engineering talent, homegrown ‘unicorn’ businesses like Skyscanner, and innovative startups working on everything from genomics to artificial intelligence to fintech in the city.
At the same time, nearly two in five Scottish employers today have vacancies in tech roles but more than 20% of adults in Scotland lack basic digital skills. That’s a significant gap in opportunity. We want to help close it.
What presence do you have here? What courses do you offer?
We launched Scotland’s first Google Digital Garage on the high street in Edinburgh in July, at 42 Shandwick Place.
The Google Digital Garage is open every day and offers free coaching in skills from ‘Taking Your First Steps Online’ to ‘How to Build Your CV’ and ‘Introduction to Coding’ as well as a course delivered in partnership with Which? on how to stay safe online. We also offer free bespoke one-to-one coaching sessions where you can get tailored advice from our expert trainers.
We are also running around 100 digital skills training events in and around Glasgow, and are excited to be back at the Mitchell Library. We have also launched Google Digital Garage bus, a traditional double decker bus converted into a digital training hub that will tour over 50 locations, offering free digital skills coaching for those who can’t travel.
We’ve hired 18 local people in Edinburgh and Glasgow to staff Google Digital Garage, which is also available online via g.co/digitalgarage
What's the vision for Google Digital Garage in Edinburgh / Scotland?
We’ve pledged to help 100,000 people in the UK find a new job or grow in their career by 2020 - and we hope many of those people will be in Scotland. This really matters, because 90% of jobs now demand digital skills.
We also know that when businesses are effective at digital tools – when they have a strong online presence – they grow twice as fast, creating more jobs, and therefore having a positive impact on the economy.
We want to help bring this growth to Scotland and give everyone the tools and support they need to take advantage of the new opportunities the web brings.
