TH Real Estate's £850 million Edinburgh St James development is one of the biggest mixed-use regeneration projects currently underway in the UK.


Edinburgh St James is a 1.7 million sqft city centre development and one of the biggest regeneration projects currently underway in the UK. On completion, Edinburgh St James will provide the Scottish capital with up to 850,000 sqft of prime retail space, five-star hotel accommodation and will deliver up to 250 new private residential apartments.

This will create a vibrant and exciting place to live, visit and shop in the heart of Edinburgh. The development now has full planning permision and construction is scheduled to start in 2016 with completion due in 2020.

It has been announced that Starwood Hotels & Resorts is to launch its iconic W Hotels brand at Edinburgh’s new ‘ribbon’ hotel, the centerpiece of the flagship £850m St James Quarter development. Colin Bennett, Starwood’s UK & Ireland area manager, explains more.

Edinburgh St James will strengthen Edinburgh's reputation as a vibrant and leading capital city. When finished, the scheme will make up to 21% of Edinburgh's retail offer (The St. James Centre currently makes up 11%), extend the city centre's retail pitch and help Edinburgh rise six places in the UK retail rankings to seventh.

The development plans to put Edinburgh on the global "map" as an international retail and leisure destination. As a World Heritage site with solid transport links and a tourism trade second only to London, Edinburgh is unique city with all the fundamentals in place to deliver a large scale regeneration project such as Edinburgh St James.

The city is the second largest financial centre in the UK and its tourist industry brings an estimated £260 million each year. Edinburgh St James will capitalise on this and TH Real Estate is working closely with Edinburgh City Council to ensure the development will fit in with and complement the rich fabric and culture of this leading UK city.

Construction on the Edinburgh St James development is due to begin in 2016.

The Edinburgh St James development is projected to create up to 1,000 new full-time equivalent jobs in Edinburgh (net) and increase the city’s annual economic output by over £40 million. The development is also expected to deliver a transformational improvement to the performance of Edinburgh’s retail and tourism sectors and dramatically improve the appearance and accessibility of the city's East End.
