A pioneering life sciences cluster

The Edinburgh city region is home to an emerging triple helix model in which public, private and academic sectors are increasingly collaborating on world-leading research into translational medicine, precision medicine and one medicine.

Today’s pioneers pay homage to Edinburgh’s unrivalled track record in the advancement of medicine; from the development of the hypodermic syringe and discovery of chloroform anaesthesia to the development of insulin, penicillin and the MRI scanner. Today, pioneering research is underway into regenerative medicine, in vitro imaging, bio-informatics, and cancer treatment, as well as food security and animal welfare.

Edinburgh BioQuarter is one of Europe’s leading facilitators of translational medical research. The co-location of leading academic and commercial research facilities beside a state-of-the-art teaching hospital, provides unprecedented opportunities for treatment and drug discovery, through clinical trials, to full commercialisation.

The Midlothian Science Zone represents the largest concentration of animal science-related expertise anywhere in Europe. It is home to the Easter Bush Research Consortium, which includes the renowned Moredun Research Institute and The Roslin Institute, home to Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell.

From frugal innovation – the application of existing technology infrastructure to improve patient access to healthcare – to the application of data analytics to deliver stratified, precision medicine, Edinburgh is leading the way.

We looked at a number of European cities for our Europe, Middle East and Africa base, but Edinburgh was chosen because of its rich history of medical innovation, a wealth of local skilled talent and its status as an international city.
