Scale, diversity and momentum

One of Europe’s fastest growing communities of developers and data scientists is helping to attract a critical mass of technology businesses and build momentum in support of Edinburgh’s vision to become the Data Capital of Europe.

Edinburgh’s technology sector has witnessed incredible growth in recent years. According to Tech Nation’s 2018 Report, digital jobs in Edinburgh increased over 3 times the UK average between 2014-2017.

With the presence of world-class universities, including the University of Edinburgh’s acclaimed School of Informatics, and home to established technology businesses such as Craneware, Amazon Development Centre Scotland, and Microsoft’s UK Technology Centre the city develops its own talent and attracts talent from all over the world.

Edinburgh’s developer ecosystem expanded by 8% in the second half of 2017, and now accounts for 7% of the city’s workforce. Complementing that growth has been a meteoric rise in Edinburgh’s data science community, which grew by 19% in 2017.

That growth is being supported by Edinburgh’s acclaimed universities. The regular provision of highly skilled graduates from establishments such as the University of Edinburgh’s world-leading School of Informatics, as well as organisations such as CodeClan, the UK’s first digital skills academy. Collaboration between academia, the public sector and private enterprise is also nurtured through The Data Lab, an innovation centre dedicated to unlocking the full potential of data analytics.

From the high-tech manufacturing of Selex ES and established home-grown tech unicorns such as Skyscanner, to ground-breaking innovations being delivered by agile start-ups such as PureLiFi, Edinburgh offers scale and choice across most technology arenas including FinTech, MedTech and EdTech.

Edinburgh benefits from a uniquely collaborative tech environment, reinforced by a diverse programme of annual events such as Engage, Invest, Exploit (EIE), Scotland’s premier technology investor showcase.

The University of Edinburgh is top-rated for computer science, delivering world-leading and internationally excellent research...We’ve found that people want to come from all over the world to live and work here.
