Payroll firm activpayroll has moved into new offices in Edinburgh, trebling its growth capacity and able to accommodate 80 staff. Chief Executive Alison Sellar explains more…

Your business in brief?

I launched activpayroll in 2001 as a local Aberdeen firm specialising in payroll for the oil and gas industry. Today we’re an award-winning global company servicing everyone from small non-profit organisations, to some of the world’s leading brands. activpayroll is a global professional service organisation, offering integrated global payroll solutions, expatriate taxation services and online HR people management tools to over 1,000 customers in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Although headquartered in Aberdeen, rapid expansion over the years has resulted in us opening offices around the globe, including Florida, Singapore, Germany, Edinburgh and Isle of Man, bringing our overall headcount to more than 125. 

Why Edinburgh?

Edinburgh has always appealed to us as a place to launch another Scottish office. Not only is it perfectly located, helping meet the growing demands of our global customers – thanks to its fantastic transport links – but it’s such a diverse market, constantly offering new and exciting opportunities.

We’ve developed a very strong and experienced team in our Edinburgh office, the city is thriving with skilled workers. The universities in and around Edinburgh are popular with students from across the globe and this enables us to attract and hire new talent. I personally find Edinburgh a beautiful city with a strong economy, rich culture and fascinating landmarks. The list of things for overseas customers and tourists to see and do in the capital is endless. 

How have you grown since you got here?

We established our second Scottish office in Edinburgh in 2009. Our Edinburgh team was very small when we first launched, but as customer demand has grown, so has our team. Our growth has resulted in us moving office location twice into bigger premises. In September 2017, we moved to London House, at the east end of Edinburgh’s New Town, to better accommodate our ever-expanding team

Although HQ'd in Aberdeen, rapid expansion has seen activpayroll open offices in Florida, Singapore, Germany, Edinburgh and the Isle of Man.

What's the vision?

My long-term vision for activpayroll is to become a global market leader in payroll services, continuing to expand our global presence across the world. We don’t only want to expand our team of payroll professionals, but we want to ensure that they are performing to the best of their ability.

Aside from being an award-winning company and global payroll leader, we strive to promote an open, friendly and rewarding working culture. We live by our values and understand the importance of flexibility and trust in the workplace –whilst still providing genuine opportunities for personal development.
