Published: 02 July 2018

Solar energy specialist AES Solar has set up a base in Edinburgh due to increased demand for its products. We spoke to Commercial Director Jamie Di Sotto…

Your business in brief?

AES Solar is the oldest solar company in Western Europe, having traded since 1979. We started at the Findhorn Foundation in Forres, Moray, manufacturing and installing solar thermal collectors.

Edinburgh is a great city with lots of construction projects ongoing and it really does give us a base to cover a wide geography. Edinburgh is excellent for transport links and the networking opportunities are endless.

Over a short period of time, the popularity and awareness of solar thermal grew and current owner George Goudsmit eventually bought over AES and moved the company to a larger premises in Forres where the company headquarters remain today.

AES Solar continues to specialise in the manufacture and installation of solar thermal power. In 2012, we moved into the solar photovoltaic market due to the huge demand for solar systems from both domestic and commercial customers.

Solar PV systems convert sunlight directly to electricity via photovoltaic cells made of semiconductor materials. Today, this market represents 80% of AES’s £2 million annual turnover. The company employs 14 people, which is mainly made up of highly qualified and talented design engineers.

AES Solar specialises in the design, manufacture, installation and service of solar thermal and solar PV systems.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Over the past two years, we have seen a rise in the number of domestic and commercial enquiries accross the central belt. These customers are looking for reliable, ethical experts to provide guidance, advice and support, which is what we are all about.

Our longevity and experience in the solar market is second to none and gives customers peace of mind, which is really important when you‘re dealing with people‘s homes or businesses.

Edinburgh is a great city with lots of construction projects  ongoing and it really does give us a base to cover a wide geography. Edinburgh is excellent for transport links and the networking opportunities are endless.

What presence will you have here? What jobs or roles will be created?

Currently the Edinburgh office will be primarily for sales and marketing, with engineers and senior management rotating visits on a weekly basis. We intend to recruit as the business grows and we will likely require operations and project management staff in future.

We‘ve had the personnel and infrastructure in place for a couple of years now, which has allowed us to survey and install in the central belt without really shouting about it or advertising. But now we want to take that a step further.

Established in 1979, AES Solar was the first manufacturer of solar thermal collectors in Western Europe.

What's the vision for your business?

The emergence of battery storage and increasing popularity of electric vehicles is very exciting for us at AES Solar and our customers.

The demand for electricity is increasing with more gadgets and vehicles coming on the market, so the ability to self-generate electricity and reduce overheads is increasingly important.

Our vision is to continue growing a sustainable business based on expertise and our ability to add value to projects of any size. We currently offer installation services across Scotland and the north of England, but our vision is to grow our reach gradually without impacting on our quality.
