Your business in brief?

Aldi entered the UK market in 1990 and has undergone rapid expansion. Now the UK’s fifth largest supermarket with a 6.8% share of the market, Aldi has more than 700 stores and more than 29,000 employees.

The company is attracting hundreds of thousands of new customers every year with its range of exclusive brands, passing low operating costs on to customers in the form of low prices. Aldi offers employees the highest starting pay in the sector – at least £8.53 an hour, which is significantly higher than the government’s National Living Wage.

Aldi already have five stores in Edinburgh, supporting more than 150 jobs.

Why is Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Edinburgh is a vibrant city with a thriving retail sector, making it a priority for our expansion. We have enjoyed significant store growth here in recent years, fostering a sense of loyalty from our customers, but there are still areas of the city where we are yet to have a presence.

We’ve had extremely positive feedback following our recent openings in Edinburgh, with local communities expressing strong support for new stores to enable them to shop and save closer to home.

What presence will you have in Edinburgh?

We already have five stores in Edinburgh, supporting more than 150 jobs, and will continue to build on this. Having recently secured the former BHS site at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, we look forward to starting work to convert it into one of our stores in the coming months. Work is also underway at our Oxgangs store, which we hope to open in November. When fully operational, these two stores combined will create up to 70 permanent new jobs.

Aldi entered the UK market in 1990 and is now the UK’s fifth largest supermarket chain.

What's the vision for Edinburgh/Scotland?

We opened eight new stores in Scotland last year, and will open a further seven this year.  We currently have more than 2,600 employees across Scotland and will continue to invest to provide new opportunities. Our nationwide investment programme will also see extensions and upgrades to existing stores to serve both new and existing customers. Refurbished stores will include newly-designed fixtures for beers, wines and spirits, fresh produce and baby and toddler, as well as a new food-to-go fixture. Each store will also benefit from a significant increase in chill space, underlining the growth of our fresh ranges.

We are also investing in other ways, with 340 Scottish-sourced products available at our stores including Specially Selected Cullen Skink, Specially Selected Aberdeen Angus Steaks, Pakora and a fine selection of Scottish craft beers. Our buying team is working to extend this to even more of the best Scottish producers.
