Amazon creates 'Silicon Valley jobs' in Edinburgh expansion

Published: 12 November 2018

Amazon recently announced it was creating another 250 jobs at its Scottish research and development hub in Edinburgh. We spoke to Graeme Smith, managing director of Amazon Development Centre Scotland.

Your business in brief?

Amazon employs around 2,500 staff in Scotland – across our research and development team at the Amazon Development Centre in Edinburgh, two fulfilment centres in Gourock and Dunfermline; the Edinburgh customer service centre; delivery stations in Motherwell, Edinburgh and Dundee; and the Prime Now distribution site in Glasgow.

Scotland and Edinburgh in particular are home to some of Europe’s most exciting start-ups so it’s fantastic we are able to expand our presence here.

Graeme Smith, managing director, Amazon Development Centre Scotland

Hiring and developing the best talent to work for Amazon in Scotland is a top priority. We are in Edinburgh for access to talent. People want to come from all over the world to live and work here, and for those who want a major dotcom career, we can offer them a really compelling proposition.

The Amazon Development Centre in Edinburgh was the company's first research and development centre outside of North America.

What is the Amazon Development Centre and why is it important?

Our development centre in Edinburgh is in the city’s iconic Waverley Gate building. It is responsible for devising and growing innovations for Amazon around the world.

Teams of software engineers, scientists, designers and managers invent new advertising technology, personalised shopping recommendations and talent management systems, benefitting Amazon customers and employees around the world.

This is a place where you can make a real difference to customers by inventing, enhancing and building world-class software and delivering amazing results. We offer exceptional opportunities to grow your technical and non-technical skills by working on exciting and challenging projects.

What new roles are you creating and why?

We recently announced plans to expand our development centre in Scotland, creating space for an additional 250 new roles dedicated to research and development.

Amazon’s Customer Service Centre, the previous occupant of the space, will now move to state-of-the-art offices in the Scottish capital. The new roles are Silicon Valley jobs right here in the heart of Scotland and will join teams working on large-scale projects using cutting edge technology.

Amazon has grown rapidly in Scotland. The 250 highly skilled jobs in Edinburgh will join teams working on large-scale projects using cutting edge technology.

What makes Edinburgh / Scotland a good place for your development centre? What's the vision for your business in Edinburgh / Scotland?

Edinburgh was Amazon’s first research and development centre outside of North America and it has a well-earned reputation as a global centre for innovation, software engineering and machine learning.

Scotland and Edinburgh in particular are home to some of Europe’s most exciting start-ups so it’s fantastic we are able to expand our presence here.

Beyond creating these new roles, we’re working hard to contribute to the wider tech-sector through our commitment to gender equality and diversity in the workplace, with activities including sponsorship of the Scotland Women in Technology Awards and the Amazon Women in Innovation Bursary with the University of Edinburgh.
