Barclays opens ‘Eagle Lab’ in Edinburgh

Published: 05 March 2018

Barclays recently opened its first Scottish ‘Eagle Lab’ at tech incubator CodeBase in Edinburgh. We spoke to Trish McClay, Eco-System Manager at the Edinburgh Eagle Lab…

Tell us about your Eagle Labs

Eagle Labs is a Barclays initiative launched in December 2015 to help the UK accelerate and empower ambitious businesses with the tools to grow the economy through innovation and change, driving digital skills development, productivity and economic growth to become a skills factory for the UK.

My vision is to create a bustling hub in the heart of Edinburgh that is the gathering place for the entrepreneur community, and the wider eco-system, to embrace technology.

Trish McClay, Eco-System Manager, Barclays Edinburgh Eagle Lab

We facilitate and deliver digital learning and activities such as coding, 3D printing, maker facilities, rapid prototyping, hackathons, as well as business incubation, mentoring, co-working and office space. The Lab in Edinburgh is the 14th and forms part of Barclays’ wider growth strategy in Scotland.

When and where was the Edinburgh Eagle Lab launched?

The Edinburgh Eagle Lab is the first in Scotland and is a partnership with CodeBase, situated inside their successful business incubator and co-working facility on Castle Terrace, Edinburgh.

We opened our doors on 16th January 2018 with Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work opening our tech-infused Maker space, and held an evening event packed with entrepreneurs, designers, corporates, academics and developers who got to see some of the new equipment in action and discuss potential projects.

What will people do at the Eagle Lab?

The Lab is packed full of cutting-edge equipment for digital fabrication, 3D printing and laser cutting, providing businesses with access to the tools they need to rapidly produce and test prototypes without having to import them from overseas.  We also offer resources including expert mentoring and workshops for Scotland’s start-up and scale-up businesses to complement CodeBase’s existing incubator services.

We will also facilitate and deliver digital skills training at the lab for business and community groups, and I’m excited to say a full time engineer will also be joining the team in Edinburgh to provide in-house technical and digital support.

The Eagle Lab in Edinburgh is the UK's 14th and forms part of Barclays’ wider growth strategy in Scotland.

What's the vision for the Scottish Eagle Lab?

I’ve been impressed with Barclays’ vision and activity over the past two years and am so excited to have joined the Eagle Lab team as the Eco-System Manager in Edinburgh.

As well as the day-to-day running and management of the Lab, my role is to work and collaborate with start-up and scale-up businesses, the community, local education authorities, makers and corporates. My vision is to create a bustling hub in the heart of Edinburgh that is the gathering place for the entrepreneur community, and the wider eco-system, to embrace technology.
