San Francisco-based Cloudflare has opened a new data centre in Edinburgh. We spoke to Nitin Rao, the company’s Head of Infrastructure and Video…

Your business in brief?

Cloudflare protects and speeds up millions of websites, online services and application interfaces without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code.

Internet properties powered by Cloudflare have all web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with each new property added. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks.

Today, the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers more than 10 trillion requests per month, which is nearly 10 percent of all internet requests. Cloudflare serves more web traffic than Twitter, Amazon, Apple, Instagram, Bing and Wikipedia combined.

Co-founded by Chief Executive Matthew Prince, Chief Operating Officer Michelle Zatlyn, and Lee Holloway in July 2009. Cloudflare was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer, named the Most Innovative Network & Internet Technology Company for two years running by the Wall Street Journal, and ranked among the world's 50 most innovative companies by Fast Company.

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, Cloudflare has offices in Austin, Texas, Champaign, Illinois, New York City, Washington, DC, London and Singapore – and more than 151 data centres around the world.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

The internet community in the UK is very well established, but mostly concentrated on London and Manchester, with a heavy emphasis on London. By deploying in Edinburgh, we're encouraging internet service providers to regionalise their traffic, away from just London.

We're connected to the Scottish internet exchange IXScotland, and are actively seeking to peer with other connected networks, to help build the peering community there.

What presence do you have in the UK?

The three UK cities where we have a major presence are London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. We're always hiring across our offices, including Edinburgh.

What's the vision for your business?

At Cloudflare, we have our eyes set on an ambitious goal — to help build a better Internet.
