Cyber security firm expands into new offices

Published: 16 July 2018

Scottish cyber security specialist Assure APM has expanded its presence in Edinburgh and opened a new office in London. We spoke to chief executive Doug More.

Your business in brief?

I set up Assure APM in 2014 with the help of founding directors Calum Lamont and Stuart Gibson. I had actually retired from my previous role, but a chance conversation about some new technology with an old colleague sparked an idea. After a bit of thought, we came up with a cunning plan to form a cyber security and IT monitoring business that could actually make a difference. Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength.

Our technology is appropriate for all sectors no matter where they’re based, but is an exceptionally good fit for financial institutions – and Edinburgh is home to some of the biggest and best. Also, the thriving technology scene and a healthy supply of skilled people make for a good base too.

We provide businesses with innovative, simple and quickly deployed solutions for cyber security and regulatory compliance for entire IT estates. We protect and monitor IT assets on the premises, in the cloud and in the data centre, and also spot and stop unintentional and malicious insider threats.

To do this, we combine our technology and expertise with the cutting-edge software of our partners, ZoneFox and Illumio, to create a bespoke product. We receive great feedback from our clients and I like to think we really do bring a new approach to the sector. We have carried out work in both the public and private sector all over the UK.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market / location for you?

Edinburgh is a great location for us. I am Edinburgh born and bred and have spent more than 40 years in the industry here, so I have a good knowledge of our market and who does what.

Assure APM launched in Edinburgh in 2014 and helps companies simplify and automate cyber troubleshooting.

How has your presence grown here? What office are you moving to?

In the past four years we’ve grown steadily and our team currently numbers eight. I expect that number to grow before the year is out. We’ve recently moved into larger new offices in Rutland Square with space to fit new recruits.

We have also opened a new office in Guildhall Yard, London, as a base for the work we do south of the border. We’re also looking at opening our first overseas office in the near future with Frankfurt currently a strong contender for this.

What's the vision for your business?

We have big plans for the future. I’m very happy to say that John Waddell, the former chief executive of business angel syndicate Archangels, has agreed to become our chairman. John has a long and distinguished career helping companies grow and he will bring this experience to bear at Assure APM.

As we continue to expand, I am particularly keen to take on graduates and give them the opportunity to develop their careers locally, retaining some of our talent here in Edinburgh.
