London-based digital marketing group Dentsu Aegis Network recently bought Edinburgh-based creative agency Whitespace for an undisclosed sum. We spoke to Richard Gill, managing partner of Dentsu Aegis Network Edinburgh.

Your business in brief?

Dentsu Aegis Network is an international digital marketing group headquartered in London and with around 38,000 staff globally. The business is made up of ten global network brands and is part of Dentsu Inc.

Edinburgh is a world class city which offers a high quality of life for our staff and a great base from which to grow in the Scottish market and beyond.

In Edinburgh, we employ more than 140 people and have a turnover of £50m. Our agency brands in the city include: Carat, our strategic media planning agency; iProspect, our digital performance agency – and our trading arms Amplifi and AMNET.

Our recent acquisition of Whitespace reflects its reputation as a fantastic creative agency widely regarded as generating the best digital creative work in the Scottish market.

We believe the digital economy is disrupting every business in every sector and our agency network has been designed to help businesses grow and thrive in that context.

Dentsu Aegis Network provides media, digital, creative, data and technology services. The acquisition of Whitespace will accelerate their creative capability in Scotland.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you? What is your presence here?

Edinburgh is a world class city which offers a high quality of life for our staff and a great base from which to grow in the Scottish market and beyond.

Last year we relocated to offices in Festival Square to accommodate our growing team and the acquisition of Whitespace gives us another great office on Kings Stables Road.

Dentsu Aegis came to Edinburgh as a result of acquisition six years ago, but the core business has been around since 1997 and has successfully navigated enormous industry change in that time.

Our network firmly believes in having a strong presence outside of London and has offices in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, as well as Edinburgh, employing more than 650 people collectively.

What's the rationale behind the Whitespace acquisition? Are you recruiting / expanding?

Whitespace is a creative agency that has been designed for the digital age.  The company’s rapid growth and amazing client roster demonstrate that.  As a network, we understand that art and science need to work in harmony, and Whitespace allows us to deliver on the promise of great ‘art’.

There are no job cuts planned as part of the acquisition, in fact we expect to grow even faster as the businesses perfectly complement each other.

Founded in 1997 with a focus on digital and brand design, Whitespace has developed into one of Scotland’s leading and most awarded creative agencies.

What's the vision for your business in Edinburgh / Scotland?

Our vision is to grow our client’s businesses by delivering great communication strategies that build their brands and drive business performance.

To do that we believe we need to get three things right: media strategy, data strategy, and creative execution. The best work is created when those three things sit closely together and, following the Whitespace acquisition, we’re better placed than anyone to deliver great work for our clients.
