Ecometrica triples profits in record-breaking year

Published: 27 August 2018

Edinburgh-based satellite mapping specialist Ecometrica posted record results for its latest financial year. We spoke to executive chairman and co-founder Dr Richard Tipper.

Your business in brief?

Ecometrica is headquartered in Edinburgh and now has offices in the US, Canada and Mexico. We employ 44 people, and have plans to expand with a sales team in South America.

This is our home and the home of many of our highly experienced and uniquely skilled staff. But apart from that, being based in Edinburgh means we are a close part of Scotland's burgeoning space sector. This is a good place to be from a point of view of talent and networking in our sector.

Dr Richard Tipper, executive chairman and co-founder, Ecometrica

I previously set up the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management and co-founded Ecometrica in 2008 with our chief executive Gary Davis. We are both University of Edinburgh graduates with decades of experience advising governments, businesses and international organisations on climate change and energy issues.

In the last year, Ecometrica has featured in the Deloitte Fast 500, the FT 1000 and Inc 5000 rankings. Our clients include the UK Space Agency and European Space Agency.

Ecometrica is the global leader in downstream space information solutions and has been named as one of the world’s top sustainability brands.

What do you do and why is this important?

Our key business is helping companies and other organisations understand their environmental impact by using mapping software and data from earth observation satellites.

We’re also involved with governments, non-governmental organisations and universities, as our Ecometrica Platform allows changes to forests, coasts or other habitats to be visualised in almost real time. These collaborations help us to improve and expand or products.

We are investing more than ever in research and development, assisted by a range of organisations and programmes for downstream space.

What are the key highlights of your recent results?

We are finally getting to a stage where the company is sustainably profitable. There’s been a lot of hard work and investment to get to this stage and we’re not easing off, but with a growing demand for environmental accounting, we believe we’re on a profitable long-term path.

In the year to March, our earnings tripled to £650,000, with a turnover increase of 109% to £5.5m. Coupled with rapid growth in the previous 12 months, our profits are 1,445% higher than 2016’s figure of £45,000. And we are expecting to grow further this year.

The award-winning Ecometrica Platform allows businesses, governments and organisations to make smarter decisions and build long-term value.

How does being based in Edinburgh help you? What's the vision for your business?

This is our home and the home of many of our highly experienced and uniquely skilled staff. But apart from that, being based in Edinburgh means we are a close part of Scotland's burgeoning space sector. This is a good place to be from a point of view of talent and networking in our sector.

My vision for the business is to be the global leader in downstream space applications. We are not far off that now.

As our chief financial officer Adrian Smith said recently, there is nothing other than our capital base stopping Ecometrica from becoming the de-facto Earth observation and sustainability software provider to governments and companies alike.
