Criton on recruitment drive after investment

Published: 15 January 2018

Edinburgh-based app developer Criton is on a recruitment drive after securing investment. We spoke to founder and chief executive Julie Grieve…

Your business in brief?

Criton is the UK’s first DIY app builder for the hospitality sector. It aggregates all guest-facing technology into one app for the guest to download pre-arrival and use during and after their stay. The app allows hotels and accommodation providers to inform guests about their own facilities as well as what’s on in the local area.

This will allow us to move into our first two overseas markets, with the Middle East and Far East under consideration. The team has tripled since we announced the investment and will continue to grow in the coming months.

I founded the business in November 2015 using the proceeds of a previous company sale, Abbey Business Centres, which I sold in 2010.  I recruited my first developer in June 2016 and the beta version of Criton was launched in October 2016. A full launch followed quickly in December. Criton is based in Edinburgh, in the largest tech incubator in Europe, CodeBase

What investment have you secured?

We secured £5m investment from a private individual in October 2017. The investment allows us to grow market share and add functionality, including multilingual versions and group hotels to our product, which is crucial for our customers. We also received an innovation award from Scottish Enterprise in November 2016, allowing us to grow staff numbers to five.

What jobs or roles are you creating?

The investment cash is being used to scale our team across the board, increasing to 30 over the next two years.

This will allow us to move into our first two overseas markets, with the Middle East and Far East under consideration. The team has tripled since we announced the investment and will continue to grow in the coming months. The roles we’re creating include developers, designers, product manager, marketing, sales and finance.

What's the vision for your business?

We want to help hotels deliver tech the way their guests want to receive it. At Criton we believe the future of guest technology is on the guest’s own device. Criton will be the aggregator of guest-facing technology for the hospitality industry.

We want to offer a world-leading guest portal to independent and small chain hotel operators – allowing them to have access to the same technology as the big chains. This will enable them to level the playing field in terms of access to guest-facing tech.
