Emirates arrives in Edinburgh

Published: 22 October 2018

Emirates has launched a new flight between Scotland’s capital city and Dubai this month. We spoke to Richard Jewsbury, the airline’s divisional vice president for the UK.

Your business in brief?

Emirates is the world’s largest international airline and the UK is among our most important markets globally, with Scotland an integral part of our success both for passenger travel and cargo.

Scotland is a key market, as Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the UK by tourists. We also anticipate it will be an important trade link for local businesses looking east...When you consider all Edinburgh has to offer, it’s clear what a great opportunity this is.

We serve a network of more than 160 destinations worldwide via our Dubai hub. We are passionate about creating and growing connections between people and places, businesses and trade.

We first flew into the UK over 30 years ago and have been operating in Glasgow successfully for more than 14 years. We currently operate more than 120 non-stop flights a week from the UK across eight regional gateways. This has been an important year as we added two new UK destinations – London Stansted and Edinburgh.

Edinburgh becomes Emirates’ eighth destination in the UK. The new service connects travellers from Edinburgh to destinations across Emirates’ global network via Dubai.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Edinburgh is an iconic city that captures the imagination of tourists around the world. Equally, Scottish travellers have a strong appetite for destinations to Dubai and beyond.

Edinburgh has the second highest disposable income after London, a rapidly emerging tech cluster, an established financial services industry and is an internationally recognised education hub. It is also the gateway to the oil industry in Aberdeen and an export base for key Scottish exports, including Scottish salmon, whisky and oil field equipment.

The new service will open our global network to the nearly 13.5 million passengers who use Edinburgh Airport every year, to points across the Middle East, Africa, the Asian Subcontinent, the Far East and Australasia.

What new flights are you introducing and why?

Flight EK023 will depart Dubai at 0955hrs and arrive in Edinburgh at 1450hrs, while the return flight, EK024 will depart Edinburgh at 2015hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0640hrs the next morning.

The arrival of the flight into Dubai is conveniently timed for connecting to Emirates’ services to popular outbound destinations for Scottish travellers, such as Bangkok, Maldives, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Cape Town and Australian cities, such as Perth and Sydney.

Customers travelling from Edinburgh, as well as Glasgow, will also be able to access more than 90 additional exciting destinations under the Emirates and flydubai network partnership, such as Kathmandu, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.

In addition to tourism, the new flight will also directly connect Edinburgh to new opportunities for business, trade and education with Emirates’ global network.

What's the vision for your business in Edinburgh / Scotland?

Scotland is a key market, as Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the UK by tourists.

We also anticipate it will be an important trade link for local businesses looking east, as we have carried in excess of 100 million kilos of cargo on the Glasgow service between 2004-2017.

When you consider all Edinburgh has to offer, it’s clear what a great opportunity this is.
