International hotel group Fattal is investing more than £30m in its Jurys Inn Edinburgh hotel and a newly acquired neighbouring site. We spoke to Jason Carruthers, managing director of Leonardo and Jurys Inn Hotels UK and Ireland.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Edinburgh is a hive of growing activity in the UK. Scotland and its capital are internationally renowned and attract visitors from across the globe throughout all seasons.

The city itself is steeped in history and heritage and has a reputation for excellent hospitality and warm, friendly service. But it’s also a city that has been able take the old and marry it with the new in a way that truly makes it a destination to be enjoyed for everyone.

Edinburgh is a city where you can visit 13th century castles and palaces and roam through its seemingly ancient cobbled streets. And then five minutes later you could find yourself by acres of parklands, on a leafy river walk or in the spectacular harbour area before happening on unique, creative and fun events like the Fringe Festival or the Hidden Door Festival.

And, as much as it is known for its culture, Edinburgh is also a hub of business excellence in the UK. Whether looking for a night’s stay in the city, hosting a seminar or arranging the annual board meeting, we know how important it is for business guests to have access to first-rate facilities in a changing work environment and in the face of emerging challenges for businesses operating in the UK.

What investment is planned for the Jurys Inn Edinburgh hotel and what's the rationale for this? How will customers benefit?

We have recently announced a £32 million investment in an Edinburgh scheme following acquisition of freehold property and adjacent site. This will include the redevelopment and expansion of our existing Jurys Inn Edinburgh hotel offering and its neighbouring site.

In addition, our plan is to convert an adjacent listed building to a new 131-room NYX hotel and, separately, the development of 31 new residential units on the 1.2 acre Jeffrey Street site. The NYX Hotel Edinburgh will be the first NYX hotel to open in the UK, providing the city with an exciting lifestyle hub of urban culture where guests can immerse themselves in Edinburgh’s creative scene.

Fattal Hotels is investing £32m to redevelop the existing Jurys Inn Edinburgh and will also bring its lifestyle brand NYX Hotel to the Old Town site.

What's the vision for your business in Edinburgh / Scotland?

Our Edinburgh hotel already runs at over 95% occupancy and the acquisition of the freehold there puts us in a strong position to capitalise on the ongoing influx of tourists to the vibrant city of Edinburgh and to leverage the prime location of our hotel and the adjacent site.

Increasing our activity here is an opportunity to further enroot ourselves within Edinburgh and contribute to all the elements that makes it a great place to visit.

The city provides excellent transport links internally and throughout the rest of Scotland, with further access links connecting the city to the rest of the UK and Ireland. Our Edinburgh hotel is just minutes away from Waverley station on foot and five minutes from the bus station, making it very easy to get around.

Our vision is to continue this growth in Scotland and to look at further opportunities for expansion as they develop.
