What are the Awards? Who takes part?
The Northern Tech Awards were designed to highlight the fastest growing tech companies in the North. We felt the region lacked a real digital identity. What national identity that did exist was focused in and around London.
We were very aware that not only did fantastic tech businesses exist in the North, it was also the obvious place to start a tech business. It has excellent transport links around Europe and beyond; there are some of the world’s leading universities – and the quality of living was extremely high.
The awards focus on the 100 Fastest Growing Tech companies over the past three years. Companies who are in the Top 100 receive an invite for their chief executive to the event. There are also awards categories which are decided on the day. We put together a list of globally recognised tech entrepreneurs who judge a shortlist of companies through a series of presentations on the day.
Award categories include Innovation Award, Leadership Award, Tech4Good and Young Entrepreneur Award.
Why bring them to Edinburgh?
Whilst the office is based in Manchester, our scope is very much the North (and this includes Scotland). We can’t afford to be parochial and we’re keen to spread the tech message far and wide. Last year, the event was in Liverpool and this year in Newcastle. Tech exists everywhere in the North and we are very keen to reflect and promote this. Nowhere is this more true than Edinburgh, which has created Skyscanner and FanDuel. As these returns are redeployed into the Edinburgh tech scene, future stars are starting to emerge. We want to ensure they receive all the positive exposure they can.
What do you hope to achieve?
As a company, we’re very keen to develop and highlight the Northern Tech ecosystem. There’s much to shout about and we don’t do enough of it. We encourage as many tech companies in the region to take part as possible. Those that do find it an extremely positive experience.
Many new connections are made and opportunities realised through the awards. Our founding ethos was to focus on the tech entrepreneur and help them become as successful as they possibly can be. Wherever technology, good ideas and great people exist, we will want to be there too. We are just getting started.
