Italian wine company opens Edinburgh hotel

Published: 18 December 2017

Italian wine company ZONIN1821 recently opened a new boutique hotel in Edinburgh. Alessandro Marchesan, the company’s Export Director, explains more…

Your business in brief?

ZONIN1821 is Italy’s largest family-owned wine company and one of the most important in Europe. We’ve been vintners since 1821 (hence the name), with strong ties to the land for the past seven generations.

Edinburgh is a vibrant city where the food and wine culture is growing and there’s a thirst for wine knowledge and dining experiences that are more refined and authentic.

We are a family business and a business of families, with a passion for winemaking, and the mission to produce the highest quality Italian wine available to all wine-lovers. The company is headquartered in Gambellara, Veneto in northern Italy and owns nine wine estates in seven wine regions of Italy.

The Wine House Hotel 1821 is a boutique hotel set in a stunning, multi-storied Georgian townhouse in the heart of Edinburgh

Of our 4,000 hectares of land, 2,000 hectares are vine planted. The Zonin family owns their own vineyards, grows their own grapes and bottles their wines at each estate, supported by the expertise of one of the largest staff of oenologists and agronomists in Europe. We export 85% of our wine to more than 110 countries, led by the USA, Germany and the UK.

Tell us about the hotel? What jobs have been created?

The Wine House Hotel 1821 is an innovative concept in hospitality created by ZONIN1821 and Scottish restaurateur, Sep Marini.

It’s a boutique hotel set in a stunning, multi-storied Georgian townhouse in the heart of Edinburgh at Picardy Place and includes a wine bar, cocktail lounge, library, function space and four individually designed hotel rooms, each inspired by the company’s Italian estates.

At its heart is the Wine Library: a place of entertainment, knowledge and community designed by the world-renowned architect Claudio Silvestrin. Here, guests can experience our Cru wines offered by the glass.

A fundamental role in this new concept is the sommelier/wine manager of the Wine Library. They will introduce guests to the pleasures of wine in an attractive and democratic way. Our goal is to enlarge our team here, reaching a staff of 20 people.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

Edinburgh is a vibrant city where the food and wine culture is growing and there’s a thirst for wine knowledge and dining experiences that are more refined and authentic.

Also, after Brexit, Edinburgh’s role as a strategic business city is absolutely relevant.

ZONIN1821, Italy’s largest family-owned wine company and one of the most important in Europe, have been vintners since 1821.

What's the vision for your business?

We’re at the very first steps of this exciting adventure, but we wish we will be able to give birth to a proper Edinburgh wine club here, where wine lovers can enjoy tailor-made experiences with Italian wines.

And, at the same time, we hope to become a democratic venue that can spread Italian wine culture.
