The luxury Edinburgh Grand set to open this week

Published: 28 May 2018

The luxury Edinburgh Grand development is due to open on 1 June. We spoke to Chris Stewart, chief executive of developer Chris Stewart Group...

What is the Edinburgh Grand?

The Edinburgh Grand comprises of 50 individually designed, luxury apartments with 5 star hotel-inspired levels of service. It owes its style to the proportions and features of one of Edinburgh’s grandest neo-classical buildings and is totally unique to its location. Our aim has been to create something completely new at the top-end of Edinburgh’s hospitality market.

Most of all, I believe The Edinburgh Grand is an innovation in Edinburgh’s hospitality market that will ensure the city maintains its place on the world stage.

There is a Hawksmoor restaurant in the art deco surroundings of the former banking hall on the ground floor.  And an appointment-only club, including lounge and cocktail bar, on the fourth floor. The interiors are exceptional and retain original features including building’s neoclassical circular atrium, decorative cornicing, wood panelling and fireplaces.

The aim is to create something completely new at the top-end of Edinburgh’s hospitality market.

What has the development involved?

The Edinburgh Grand is part of The Registers, the project to regenerate the south-east corner of St Andrew Square. It sits alongside The Mint Building, which when complete will provide more than 60,000 sq ft of premium Grade A office space, additional restaurants and retail units.

The final stage of the development is to upgrade the public realm to make this a beautiful walkway from the square to the new Edinburgh St James, showing off some of the city’s historic architecture.

The level of investment at The Registers is in the region of £85m and we’re turning a neglected area of the city into something worth visiting.

What is Chris Stewart Group and what has been your role?

The Edinburgh Grand is magnificent and I personally take a lot of pride in the time, effort and attention to detail that has gone into every aspect of the build and fit-out. Getting the interiors right so that they work with the idiosyncracies and style of the building, while meeting the very exacting building and health and safety demands, has been a challenge that we have immersed ourselves in for the past two years.

Chris Stewart Group is both the developer and the operator through our luxury serviced apartment business Lateral City, which also runs Old Town Chambers and Merchiston Residence

There will be a Hawksmoor restaurant in the art deco surroundings of the former banking hall on the ground floor.

What jobs will be created? What will it mean for Edinburgh?

Across The Registers development, we estimated we would be bringing in the region of 750 jobs to the city centre. This would certainly be an achievement. For us, The Edinburgh Grand in particular has also been about creating something that reflects the uniqeness of the city, while being refreshing in its originality.

We have restored a historic building that was at risk, and attracted high profile restaurateurs who are offering new ways of dining and enjoying a drink at a bar.
