Queensway's Point A brand expands

Published: 19 November 2018

London-based hotel group Point A Hotels is opening a new hotel in Edinburgh next summer. We spoke to Joe Stenson, group development director at Queensway Group, owners of Point A Edinburgh.

Your business in brief?

Point A Hotels is a collection of centrally located, UK city hotels that was launched in February 2017, offering guests exceptional service at affordable prices.

It’s a year-round destination with a strong leisure market and it has a tremendous amount to offer our leisure guests. What’s more, in recent years the corporate market has gone from strength to strength, with numerous, diverse corporate businesses locating themselves in the city.

There are currently seven Point A Hotels – six in London and one in Glasgow – with two new properties opening in 2019, in Edinburgh and London Kensington, and one in Dublin in 2020.

Point A Edinburgh, which will open in time for the 2019 Festival Fringe, is located in Morrison Street and will have 149 compact-boutique guest bedrooms, a spacious, 24-hour hosted reception and a lobby lounge. The hotel marks an investment in Edinburgh in excess of £18m by Queensway Group, a family-owned real estate business that has interests in hotels, restaurants and coffee houses, as well as property development and lettings.

The build started in July 2018 and we are working with Scottish companies including architects Maith Design, quantity surveyors and project managers NBM, structural engineers Will Rudd Davidson and contractor Thomas Johnstone.

Point A Edinburgh, located near Haymarket Station, will have 149 guest rooms and the company's first to open with new generation public areas and bedrooms.

What makes Edinburgh an attractive market for you?

As the Scottish capital, Edinburgh has been an important target for us. It’s a year-round destination with a strong leisure market and it has a tremendous amount to offer our leisure guests. What’s more, in recent years the corporate market has gone from strength to strength, with numerous, diverse corporate businesses locating themselves in the city.

We are delighted to have secured our prime location in Morrison Street, as there is a strong demand in the city for quality, centrally located accommodation of the type offered by Point A Hotels.

The site has superb transport links, including being just 100m from Haymarket Station, with its easy access by tram to the airport which, thanks to wider range of arrivals in recent years, is opening up the city to more potential guests than ever.

What presence will you have here? What jobs or roles will be created?

We plan to employ around 25 staff across all operational areas at Point A Edinburgh, from guest management and hosting to housekeeping and maintenance, and we expect to start recruiting in spring 2019.

Queensway launched the Point A Hotels brand in 2017. The hotels are centrally located and offer guests Hypnos beds, fast and free WiFi, power showers and smart TVs.

What's the vision for your business?

Point A Edinburgh will be our second Scottish property – our first opened in March 2017 in Glasgow – and the eighth property in the Point A Hotels portfolio.

Our brand has evolved significantly in the 18 months since launch, and Edinburgh will be our first hotel to open with our new generation of public areas and bedrooms whose designs emphasise guest comfort in their choice of furnishings, technology and space management.

We see this opening as just the beginning for Point A Hotels’ presence in Edinburgh and we are actively on the lookout for additional locations in the city!
