Start-up Summit returns to Edinburgh for its seventh year

Published: 17 September 2018

Startup Summit returns to Edinburgh next month for its seventh year and is expected to host around 1,000 people. We spoke to Bruce Walker, the managing director and co-founder of event organiser, FutureX…

Your business in brief

Our team at FutureX is based in Leith, Edinburgh, and is building a global network of high growth, values-led leaders, who we believe will be instrumental in shaping the economy for the better.

Over the years we’ve hosted events and run programmes across Europe, the Middle East, USA and Asia – but there’s something unique about Edinburgh...Edinburgh was always the natural choice for us when we designed Startup Summit.

We host a series of international summits, deliver unique development programmes in Silicon Valley and Berlin, and partner with governments, corporates, startups and entrepreneurial individuals to pioneer a new way of business.

Startup Summit is Scotland’s leading startup event. It welcomes 1,000 entrepreneurial people to learn from some of the most innovative and successful business leaders around.

What is the Startup Summit and why is it important?

Startup Summit is Scotland’s leading startup event. Every year, we welcome 1,000 entrepreneurial people to learn from some of the most innovative and successful business leaders around. The event, held in Edinburgh’s historic Assembly Rooms, has an extensive itinerary for attendees, with speakers and panels set over three stages, a breakout exhibition area and practical workshops.

Being an entrepreneur can be incredibly fulfilling, but it’s certainly not without its challenges, which is why we were compelled to create Startup Summit. We wanted to explore new ways of supporting entrepreneurs, meeting their technical needs but also inspiring them to think differently about how to grow their companies.

What are this year's key highlights? What partners are involved?

This year is really exciting for us. After taking a considered look at the themes that have been emerging in the business world, we decided to focus Startup Summit 2018 on ‘the power of company culture’ and explore how the right culture can accelerate a business.

We’ve got a really diverse line-up of speakers this year, from Silicon Valley executives and investors to Edinburgh-based social enterprise founders, who will each be sharing their perspective on the changing business landscape.

We’ll also be hosting the final of our Startup Summit competition, which will see one tech entrepreneur win a place on our Silicon Valley Accelerate programme, along with £200k worth of business support from our partners at STV, Johnston Carmichael, Adopt an Intern and IBM.

Startup Summit 2018 will focus on ‘the power of company culture’ and explore how the right culture can accelerate a business.

Why is Edinburgh the best place to host your event?

Over the years we’ve hosted events and run programmes across Europe, the Middle East, USA and Asia – but there’s something unique about Edinburgh. We have watched a thriving community develop in Scotland, with all the right ingredients to be a world leader in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Our government plays an active role in supporting new enterprises, and that, along with our standard of living and education, international connections and community spirit, makes this an unignorable hub for business. Edinburgh was always the natural choice for us when we designed Startup Summit.

Startup Summit takes place in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, on 31st October 2018.
