Tell us more about the business?
Staycity Aparthotels is based in Dublin and offers aparthotel lettings in central city locations including Edinburgh, Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London, Paris, York, Marseille and Lyon. The company was founded in 2004 by Tom Walsh and his brother Ger, starting with a single apartment in Dublin’s Temple Bar, a former recording studio used by the likes of U2.

The company has grown as travellers have started to look for less formal accommodation than a hotel without the restrictions of meal times and dress codes – and where they’re not paying for facilities they won’t use. Our apartments all have kitchen facilities so guests can bring their own food and drink to cook when they want. This is particularly important for business people staying away from home and travellers with young children.
Since 2004, we have opened apartments in ten European countries and have just announced six new sites across Europe including two further properties in Dublin, another in Manchester as well as Berlin, Venice and Disneyland Paris. Later this year we will open a second site in Liverpool.
Where is the new development, what will it feature?
Our plans for growth are concentrated in key European cities including UK, Germany and France. We currently have 1,830 apartments but we’re on track to operate 15,000 apartments by 2022.
Last year we launched a new premium brand, Wilde Aparthotels by Staycity. The first Wilde in London’s Covent Garden is due to open later this year. The second will be located on King’s Stables Road in Edinburgh.
Our Wilde aparthotels will be located in prestigious city sites and their look and feel will be more design-led. They will also be fairly high-tech, and will have luxury features including a super-comfy XL-sized bed, rainfall shower and high quality bed linen. Work on our Edinburgh Wilde started at the end of 2017, with the opening planned for late 2019.
Why did you choose Edinburgh?
We already operate a Staycity in Edinburgh and its popularity amongst tourists and business travellers prompted us to look for further sites in this fantastic city. The King’s Stables Road development is perfect for the Wilde brand as it’s so close to the Castle in the city centre – and part of a state-of-the art regeneration of a historic building.
What's the vision for your business?
King’s Stables Road will provide an impressive and unusual setting for our second Wilde Aparthotel venture, with its centerpiece being an arts facility with a gallery and exhibition space. The space will house art installations from local artists, which will be open to everyone.
With Wilde’s strong link to cultural icon Oscar Wilde, we hope the arts facility element of the scheme will become a destination in its own right, benefitting local businesses and helping King’s Stables Road become a new arts centre for the city.
