George Street and First New Town redesign

Published: 09 November 2018

The City of Edinburgh Council have created initial concept designs for the future of central Edinburgh.

A key step to achieving this goal is to plan for improvements to the quality and operation of the First New Town streets of George Street, Castle Street, Frederick Street Hanover Street.

The design aims to create a vibrant area with a world class street environment that is safe for all users. It will enhance its use for pedestrians while prioritising active travel for all.

The project builds on previous input from residents, businesses and interested parties.  Design principles were adopted following a trial last year to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists on George Street.

To ensure the needs and views of citizens, community groups and stakeholders in the design process are represented, The City of Edinburgh Council are holding a series of drop-in events where you will be able to view initial concept designs and provide valuable feedback which will help in the development of a final design for the area.
